Patricia Urquiola

Born in Oviedo, Spain in 1961, Patricia Urquiola is a Milan-based designer and architect whose unconventional works blend emotion, innovation and technical precision. After studying architecture at Madrid Polytechnic, she was mentored by Achille Castiglioni at Milan Polytechnic, where she graduated in 1989. She worked as an assistant lecturer on Castiglioni’s courses and collaborated with Vico Magistretti and Piero Lissoni before opening her own studio in Milan in 2001.

Working in product design, installation and architecture, Urquiola has gone on to design for some of the most significant Italian and international companies. Not only has Urquiola been named ‘Designer of the Year’ by several publications, but also ‘Designer of the Decade’. She has received prestigious accolades from the country of her birth, being awarded the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal of Fine Arts) by the Spanish government and the Order of Isabella the Catholic by King Juan Carlos I of Spain in 2011. Several of her designs are on display in permanent collections around the world, including at the New York MoMA.
